The door lock actuator is the mechanism that controls your car's door lock. The actuator is located below your vehicle's key latch; the actuator and key latch are connected by a thin metal rod. You may recall that there is a knob that sticks out of your vehicle that indicates whether the door is locked or unlocked. This is because of a second thin metal rod that connects the key latch to this knob. When you lock or unlock your car, either with your vehicle's remote or manually, the actuator is activated. It moves the door locking latch either up or down. When the latch is in an "unlocked" position, the door handle on the outside of the car is directly connected to the opening mechanism, which allows the door to be open or closed at will. When the latch is "locked," the door handle is not connected to the opening mechanism and the door cannot be opened from the outside without a key.
